Sawbridge Words is a small bookshop about three-quarters of the way down Bell Street. We are well away from the hustle of the main road at number 47, just opposite the Café of the Angels.
We try to reflect the many interests of residents of Sawbridgeworth and regularly hold events featuring local authors. These have proved very popular and we are planning a further sequence in the near future.
Mon-Sat: 10am to 6pm, but see notice below.
Please feel free to come in and browse. We have a lounge area with tea and coffee always available and even biscuits (sometimes).
CLOSURE OF SAWBRIDGE WORDS BOOKSHOP
ALL NEW BOOKS HALF PRICE!!
With a heavy heart I have made the decision to close down Sawbridge Words bookshop with effect from June this year (2018). This is due to the generally very poor level of shop sales and the heavy overheads which simply make it impossible for me to continue the business indefinitely. It is a source of great regret to me to have to make this decision, not least because I have invested so much time, energy and money, but it is unavoidable.
I have tried very hard to make a success of the shop over the last two and a half years or so with special offers, talks and lectures and book signings, and a variety of events such as the Writers Club, book groups and a children's reading group. However, it is evident that the competition from online sources such as Amazon, eBay, Abe Books etc; downloads, kindle and even other high street outlets such as charity shops make it too difficult to survive. My thanks to all those customers who have supported the shop and continue to do so and especially to those who have been pro-active on the shop's behalf with talks, event organization, clubs, reading groups etc.
The shop will continue in being until the lease expires in June, though I shall be winding the business down and all new books are now half price! So hurry while stocks last! Unfortunately it will not be possible for the shop to open six days a week as at present due to the necessity for me to seek alternative employment. I will try to open the shop as often as possible, which may be for only two days a week, and maybe parts of other days. This will vary from week to week and I will post information regarding opening days and times outside the shop and on Facebook. Most of the events will continue in being including any advertised talks and the Writers Club. But I will keep you posted.
Once again I am very sorry to have to take this decision but I have no choice.

A partial list of these may be found by following the link below.
This list is maintained on a pro-tem basis and a phone call will hold stock for a short period.
